About this event

This concert marks the 50th anniversary of the death of Benjamin Britten (1913–1976), one of the most significant British composers of the 20th century. Presented as part of Ex Cathedra’s 2026–27 season, the programme spans three choral works from different stages of Britten’s career: the precocious A Boy was Born, the wartime A Ceremony of Carols, and the dramatic cantata Saint Nicolas. It is also part of Jeffrey Skidmore’s final season as Artistic Director after 58 years, bringing together the Ex Cathedra Choir and Academy of Vocal Music with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. The afternoon concert at Birmingham’s Town Hall lasts around 2 hours 10 minutes including interval(s).
