Rhapsodies, lazy afternoons – and a wild night of dreams. The programme opens with Debussy’s Prélude à l’après‑midi d’un faune, whose sensual haze shocked some in 1899 but now shimmers with luminous calm. Ruth Gipps’ Wind Sinfonietta follows, a lush, lyrical celebration of the wind section. After the interval, Debussy’s Rhapsodie is heard in its cor anglais version, spotlighting the English horn’s distinctive melancholy, with François Leleux both conducting and taking the solo. The evening ends with Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique – a radical, genre‑busting vision that storms from reverie to nightmare.
