This concert marks a significant milestone: Gustavo Dudamel’s first European appearances as Music & Artistic Director of the New York Philharmonic, a post he assumes in September 2026. The program pairs a newly commissioned work by Pulitzer Prize–winning composer Tania León with Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, a cornerstone of the Philharmonic’s history. León’s Imágenes mestizas, a NY Phil commission, receives its world premiere in New York in late September 2026 before the orchestra brings the work to Madrid on tour. The coupling reflects Dudamel’s curatorial approach of placing contemporary voices alongside canonical repertoire, illuminating both. Mahler’s Symphony No. 5, famed for its Adagietto, charts a journey from funeral march to triumph, demanding brilliance and depth from a large orchestra. Dudamel’s interpretation with the New York Philharmonic is anticipated as a highlight of his inaugural season.
