This concert frames Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 25 with two operatic contrasts. It opens with the effervescent overture to Johann Strauss II’s Die Fledermaus, full of champagne sparkle and dance rhythms. Emanuel Ax, a multiple Grammy-winning pianist, then performs Mozart’s grand C major concerto, K. 503, once hailed by a contemporary critic as “maybe the most magnificent of all the concertos which have ever been written.” After the interval comes the dark intensity of Richard Strauss’s Elektra, heard in a half-hour orchestral suite arranged by Manfred Honeck and Tomáš Ille. The programme spans vivid festive brilliance to psychological extremity, all linked by operatic imagination.
