This concert is part of the Philharmonia Orchestra’s 2026/27 Bedford season under Principal Conductor Santtu‑Matias Rouvali. The programme traces a Russian arc from Borodin’s Romantic evocation of the Eurasian steppe, through Tchaikovsky’s landmark Piano Concerto No. 1, to Shostakovich’s politically charged Symphony No. 11. A core feature is the artistic partnership between Rouvali and Seong‑Jin Cho, described by the Philharmonia as regular collaborators and “musical soulmates”. Tchaikovsky’s concerto is framed as a showcase for Cho’s virtuosity, from the famous opening chords to the blazing finale, and as a work that overcame a cool critical reception at its Boston premiere to become a true classic. After the interval, Shostakovich’s Eleventh Symphony depicts the events of Bloody Sunday in 1905 St Petersburg with cinematic sweep, weaving revolutionary songs, laments, tolling bells and relentless percussion into a warning to the future.
