Masterpieces Unboxed is a recurring presentation series at Het Concertgebouw that opens up landmark chamber works for a broad audience. In each edition, a presenter explains the piece and its context before a complete performance. In this programme, presenter Gijs Kramers explores Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 21 in C major, Op. 53 “Waldstein”, using live piano fragments to illuminate structure, narrative, and historical background. After the analysis, pianist Amiri Harewood performs the full Waldstein Sonata, followed by Beethoven’s Andante favori in F, WoO 57. The evening lasts 75 minutes without intermission, and the spoken language is English. The framing highlights the sonata’s ambition and its role as a gateway to Beethoven’s late style. Staging is simple—presenter and piano on stage—and the series is supported by Fonds Hemelbestormers within Het Concertgebouw’s in-house programming.
