Oratorio / Orchestral Concert
This concert marks the inaugural performance of Tarmo Peltokoski as Music Director of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, launching the 2026/27 season. The programme features Mahler's Symphony No. 8 in E-flat major, widely known as the "Symphony of a Thousand" for its monumental forces. Peltokoski has called it "a piece reserved for the most special and rare occasions," chosen to open his tenure. This is the HK Phil’s first-ever performance of Mahler’s Eighth, completing the orchestra’s traversal of all Mahler symphonies. The work’s scale requires an expanded orchestra, eight vocal soloists, and multiple choirs. Joining the HK Phil and HK Phil Chorus are the London Philharmonic Choir and The Hong Kong Children's Choir. The concert is sponsored by Chow Sang Sang, runs approximately 1 hour 40 minutes without intermission, and will use a real-name registration ballot for URBTIX public sales from 6 August 2026.
