About this event

A revival of Musiktheater im Revier’s production returns Wagner’s early masterpiece to the Großes Haus. The staging sees the stage as a temporary landfall for the Dutchman and centers on Senta, the captain’s daughter, who grows up with legends and imagines redeeming the cursed sailor. Director Igor Pison and the team explore the spell of myth and the false certainties stories can plant in childhood. The concept asks whether Senta’s idealized devotion can become a relationship of equals. Contemporary design elements, video, and sound evoke the sea as an unstable force, aligning the visual world with Wagner’s score.
