Opera
North Carolina Opera opens its 2026–2027 season with a fully staged production of Bizet’s Carmen at Raleigh Memorial Auditorium, conducted by Joseph Mechavich and directed by Denyce Graves. Graves, internationally renowned for her own portrayals of the title role, brings a performer’s insight to the directorial helm. The production features Gina Perregrino as Carmen, Eric Taylor as Don Jose, Laureano Quant as Escamillo, and Elana Gleason as Micaela. Sung in French with English supertitles, the staging offers full theatrical treatment with sets, costumes, and staging. Presented in downtown Raleigh as part of NC Opera’s season, the production foregrounds the opera’s themes of desire, obsession, freedom, and consequence, set to Bizet’s unforgettable music.
