Oratorio / Orchestral Concert
Joana Mallwitz, one of today’s most acclaimed conductors and recently the protagonist of the celebrated documentary portrait "Momentum" in Swiss cinemas, returns to Bern with Gustav Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 9. In his final completed work, Mahler — standing at the threshold of the hereafter — looks back at a world on the brink of collapse just a few years before the outbreak of the First World War. With purely musical means, he not only takes the pulse of society but also processes deeply personal pain. In mourning the early death of his daughter Maria Anna, he even weaves a musical quotation from his Kindertotenlieder. Mahler’s swan song simultaneously signals a new beginning and has been called "the first work of New Music" (Alban Berg). Mahler’s Ninth is thus many things at once: both an ending and a prospect, a requiem oscillating between world-weariness and irony — and a moving musical testament.
