This concert in Bourgie Hall’s Grand Jazz Evenings series traces Benny Goodman’s dual legacy in jazz and classical music. Clarinetist Pierre Génisson and pianist Bruno Fontaine present a crossover program that pairs classical repertoire linked to Goodman—most notably Francis Poulenc’s Clarinet Sonata, which Goodman commissioned and premiered—with iconic jazz standards from his book such as Sing, Sing, Sing and Sweet Georgia Brown. Two Gershwin transcriptions prepared by Fontaine and Génisson frame the program’s theme: Three Preludes and a premiere arrangement of Rhapsody in Blue for clarinet and piano. The intimate duo setting highlights the stylistic flexibility and virtuosity that defined Goodman’s career, moving fluently between swing and the classical concert stage.
