Presented in Bourgie Hall’s Guest Presenters series at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, this concert opens the 40th season (2026–2027) of the Montreal-based baroque ensemble Les Idées heureuses. Founded in 1987 by harpsichordist Geneviève Soly and under new artistic leadership since 2023, the ensemble explores Georg Philipp Telemann’s fascination with Polish musical idioms. Telemann, among the most prolific Baroque composers, absorbed styles from across Europe; his encounters with Polish folk dances and songs informed a distinctive “polonoise” character found throughout this program. Led from the violin by Olivier Brault, the concert features soloists Alexa Raine-Wright (transverse flute) and Vincent Lauzer (recorder), supported by strings and continuo on period instruments. The program’s pairing of recorder and traverso culminates in a double concerto, highlighting Telemann’s flair for contrasting timbres within elegant Baroque forms.
