About this event

This concert is part of the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra's 2026/27 Signature Series, conducted by Music Director Julian Kuerti and featuring works by Beethoven, Liszt, and Brahms. It opens with Beethoven's Overture to King Stephen, written in 1811 for the dedication of a theatre in Pest. Internationally acclaimed pianist Yefim Bronfman performs Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 2 in A major, a through-composed, ever-evolving piece underwritten by the Robert and Marianne Denes Fund. The program concludes with Brahms's Symphony No. 4 in E minor, described as a towering masterpiece of transformation and emotional intensity that culminates in a relentless, momentum-building finale. The pairing of Liszt and Brahms highlights contrasting 19th-century aesthetics—Liszt's programmatic New German School versus Brahms's classical, absolute music. Bronfman returns to Kalamazoo after past collaborations with the orchestra, reinforcing his standing as a major guest artist of the season.
