This Stuttgart revival presents Katie Mitchell’s production (Royal Opera House, 2016) with the dramatic focus squarely on Lucia’s point of view. Rather than a fragile victim drifting into madness, Lucia is seen as a vivid, multifaceted woman whose fulfillment through love is violently denied. The forced marriage and the killing of Arturo precipitate her breakdown; the iconic mad scene is framed as the consequence of coercion and trauma. The action is reset to the 1830s–1840s, the era of Dark Romanticism, with gothic imagery turning the drama into a psychological thriller. Vicki Mortimer’s set and costumes, Jon Clark’s lighting, and Joseph Alford’s choreography reinforce this vision. Johanna Mangold’s dramaturgy underpins the psychological reading, and Robin Tebbutt stages the revival.
