Beginning with Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America”—a musical prayer of thanksgiving from a refugee-turned-American icon—Fellow Citizens is a themed recital that explores migration and immigration narratives in the United States through song. The program reflects on two enduring, often competing stories in American life: the assertion that “America is for Americans” and the vision of a “Nation of Immigrants.” Spanning eras and styles, the evening connects European-classical roots (Schubert) with American modernist and folk-inflected voices (Ruth Crawford Seeger) and introduces a newly commissioned work by contemporary composer Shawn Okpebholo. Tenor Nicholas Phan and pianist Myra Huang bring this wide-ranging musical portrait of American identity to the stage.
