About this event
Claude Debussy and Karol Szymanowski, a few years apart, wrote two masterpieces of instrumental music inspired by Greek mythology. Yet their worlds are far apart: Szymanowski, a Polish composer born in present-day Ukraine, still stands in the great Romantic tradition of virtuosity, while Debussy relentlessly seeks a music of suggestion, color, and in‑between spaces — a music “between the notes.” Szymanowski maintained a deep connection with Antiquity, nourished by his travels in Sicily, where he was fascinated by the palpable presence of the Greek world, its ruins, and its cultural layers. Out of this Mediterranean imagination he composed in 1915 a cycle for violin and piano. The program opens with Debussy’s Prelude to “The Afternoon of a Faun,” an emblematic work of the musical revolutions of the early 20th century.
