American baritone Thomas Hampson, a lifelong advocate for the works of African-American composers, presents the song cycle "Fields of Wonder" by Robert Owens. This marks the first time the complete cycle will be experienced at the Elbphilharmonie. Breaking from the traditional lieder recital format, Hampson is not solely accompanied by a piano. Instead, the musical arrangement features the Rothko String Quartet, augmented specifically for this concert by a double bass. The performance is further enriched by the choreography of Liedstadt Artist-in-Residence Andreas Heise, transforming the music into a deeply emotional and immediate physical experience. The program is complemented by additional songs from Leonard Bernstein, Florence B. Price, and Margaret Bonds, creating a concert evening of significant emotional depth and social relevance.
