About this event

If there was such a thing as a hit in the Renaissance, it was Pierre Sandrin’s Doulce mémoire. This French chanson contemplates the bittersweet memory of a lost love in an irresistibly tuneful polyphonic setting that spread across Europe and even inspired entire masses. In this concert, the period-instrument orchestra Capriccio Stravagante and director Skip Sempé take Sandrin’s chanson as the point of departure, placing it alongside responses and reimaginings by composers who drew on its melody, including Diego Ortiz, Tielman Susato and Cipriano de Rore. The intricate vocal writing is performed by the Czech vocal ensemble Cappella Mariana, specialists in authentic renditions of medieval and Renaissance polyphony—an ideal complement to Capriccio Stravagante’s 16th‑century sonorities.
