The series "Beethoven: The String Quartets" presents the complete cycle of Ludwig van Beethoven's 16 string quartets performed by the French ensemble Quatuor Ébène across six concerts at the Elbphilharmonie and Laeiszhalle in Hamburg. The project is timed to mark the 200th anniversary of Beethoven's death in 2027. The Recital Halls (Kleiner Saal) of both venues are chosen for their intimate acoustic qualities suited to chamber music. Quatuor Ébène previously undertook an extensive international tour under the motto "Beethoven Around the World," performing and recording the complete Beethoven quartets. The ensemble brings this accumulated experience to the present cycle in Hamburg. The cycle progresses from the early Op. 18 quartets through the middle-period Razumovsky quartets to the late quartets, with each concert pairing works from different creative periods and tracing Beethoven's development in the string quartet genre.
