Two classical stars shape this extraordinary program: the Latvian organist Iveta Apkalna lends her artistry to Camille Saint-Saëns’s majestic “Organ Symphony,” while the French violist Antoine Tamestit takes center stage in Thierry Escaich’s subtle and finely wrought Viola Concerto “La nuit des chants.” The concerto was composed especially for Tamestit and explores the shimmering expressive possibilities of his instrument. The evening opens with Richard Wagner’s commanding “Tannhäuser” Overture. Presented by HamburgMusik and supported by the Stiftung Elbphilharmonie, this concert is a guest performance and tour stop by the WDR Sinfonieorchester under the baton of Marie Jacquot.
