Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Inori opens the NOW! Festival 2026 at the Philharmonie Essen under the festival theme “Transzendenz.” The 90‑minute, uninterrupted ritual fuses sound and sacred gesture: two mime soloists (Beter and Beterin) perform precisely choreographed prayer gestures drawn from diverse cultures and eras, synchronized to Stockhausen’s intricate score so that music becomes prayer and prayer becomes music. The performance features piano and the Japanese rin (singing bowl) with the Neue Philharmonie Westfalen, led by Stockhausen specialist Wolfgang Lischke, ensuring fidelity to the composer’s demanding vision.
