About this event
In commemoration of the 200th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s death, the Philharmonie Essen honors the Viennese classical master during its 2026/2027 concert season with a series of specialized performances. As a highlight of the NOW! Festival, "Beethoven electric" presents a unique homage through the lens of electroacoustic music, showcasing works by three prominent composers in the genre. The production utilizes a multichannel sound system to deliver an immersive auditory experience. The artistic vision bridges classical heritage with modern electronic manipulation, demonstrating how Beethoven’s foundational works continue to inspire avant‑garde sound design and spatial audio exploration. A central feature of this staging is the world premiere of a newly commissioned piece by English composer Jonty Harrison, specifically created for the NOW! Festival. The concert’s late‑night scheduling (21:30) in the NATIONAL-BANK Pavillon further emphasizes its contemporary, experimental atmosphere.
