This concert explores how music interacts with physical space and acoustics, taking inspiration from the architecture of St Mark’s Basilica in Venice. In the late 16th and early 17th centuries, multiple choir lofts in the Basilica helped foster the Venetian polychoral style, with musicians positioned around the building to perform in antiphony. For one evening, Dvořák Hall becomes a “little St Mark’s,” with spatial placement designed for Giovanni Gabrieli and the young German conductor-composer Oscar Jockel. Jockel’s fascination with sound and Gabrieli’s music inspired him to compose paths in the sky for five distinct instrumental groups. Instruments will sound from all corners of the hall, creating an immersive, atmospheric experience that places the listener firmly in the present moment.
