About this event

Director Philipp Stölzl’s staging of Der fliegende Holländer critically examines the opera’s traditional image of women. The production follows the story strictly from Senta’s perspective, portraying her as a woman effectively “sold” by her father and expected to erase her identity for the sake of another man. It emphasizes the claustrophobic, oppressive nature of Senta’s reality and contrasts it with her obsession with the phantom sailor. The staging is a co-production with Staatsoper Unter den Linden (Berlin) and originated at Theater Basel. A 30‑minute introduction to the work is offered before each performance.
