About this event
The second Tonhalle concert of the season, led by Chief Conductor Pietro Rizzo, is themed “molto italiano” and offers a focused exploration of Italian modernism. The program opens with Ottorino Respighi’s Trittico Botticelliano, a vivid musical translation of three masterpieces by Renaissance painter Sandro Botticelli. The evening centers on Nino Rota, pairing his classical Trombone Concerto in C major—among the most significant works in the trombone repertoire—with music from his iconic score for Federico Fellini’s La Strada. Adding historical weight is Ferruccio Busoni’s Berceuse élégiaque, famously premiered by Gustav Mahler in 1911. The concert also marks the St. Gallen debut of Swedish-Swiss trombonist Louise Pollock as the featured soloist.
