According to composer and pianist Ferruccio Busoni, “truly great music remains great, no matter through which medium it reveals itself.” The quintet featuring renowned Baroque bassoonist Sergio Azzolini has clearly taken this maxim to heart. Their program presents works by Johann Sebastian Bach and his sons Carl Philipp Emanuel and Wilhelm Friedemann in strikingly varied and often unexpected instrumentation: recorder, bassoon, cello, lute, and even a saxophone appear, creating fresh colors and remarkable listening experiences. In doing so, the ensemble demonstrates how profoundly the Bach family’s music still speaks today and why it has captivated audiences for generations.
