About this event
A supergroup has been assembled to mark the centenary of John Coltrane, the legendary saxophonist and pioneer of spiritual jazz. As Joe Lovano explains, the ensemble pays tribute to Coltrane’s compositions while discovering and expressing themselves in his spirit. The quintet unites five internationally acclaimed jazz artists who have each appeared in Hungary individually: saxophonists Joe Lovano and Melissa Aldana, pianist Nduduzo Makhathini, bassist Linda May Han Oh, and drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts. Watts has collaborated with the Marsalis brothers as well as Coltrane’s son, Ravi. Makhathini’s playing draws on South African and spiritual roots, and Aldana represents a vibrant voice of the younger generation. Together, they celebrate Coltrane’s legacy in a 90‑minute concert.
