This special semi-staged presentation of Georges Bizet’s Carmen is produced by the Opéra de Monte-Carlo in the 2026–2027 season. Stripping back heavy scenery, the staging (mise en espace) by Vanessa d’Ayral de Sérignac focuses attention on the drama and the music. The gala features major debuts: mezzo-soprano Marina Viotti appears in Monte-Carlo for the first time in the title role, and tenor Benjamin Bernheim sings Don José for the first time. Bass-baritone Erwin Schrott joins as Escamillo. Marc Leroy-Calatayud conducts the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo, with choral forces from the Chœur de l’Opéra de Monte-Carlo and the Children’s Choir of the Académie de Musique Rainier III, under chorus master Stefano Visconti.
