About this event

Jacques Offenbach’s fantastic opera The Tales of Hoffmann is presented at Theater Münster in a new production. For Offenbach, composing the work became a race against time—comparable to Scheherazade, who tells a thousand and one nights of stories to delay her execution. Offenbach resists the passing of time and, at the same moment, stares into the abyss of a society marked by decline, whose catastrophes he senses. Unlike Scheherazade, he loses this race: when he died in 1881, he left behind a vast, fragmentary body of material from which every performance must make its own selection. In the Münster staging, the very act and miracle of storytelling takes center stage: Hoffmann tells… The production is directed by Magdalena Fuchsberger, with musical direction by Henning Ehlert.
