This performance launches Yannick Nézet-Séguin’s complete cycle of Gustav Mahler’s symphonies for Carnegie Hall’s 2026–2027 season. Leading The Philadelphia Orchestra, he begins with Mahler’s Fifth—often described by the conductor as the composer’s first absolute symphony, free of overt programmatic narrative. Nézet-Séguin calls it the ultimate orchestral work, “a symphony that has everything.” The program also presents the New York premiere of Julia Wolfe’s Liberty Bell, a Carnegie Hall co-commission that brings a vibrant contemporary voice to the evening, alongside Anton Webern’s early orchestral work Im Sommerwind. Together, the selections highlight the expressive range and historical breadth of the symphonic tradition.
