Elim Chan leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic in a program that contrasts Impressionistic atmosphere with bold, rhythmic modernism, anchored by a major contemporary premiere. The concert opens with Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, a work noted for its dreamlike colors and fragile beauty that helped revolutionize orchestral sound. The centerpiece is the world premiere of Samuel Adams’ Violin Concerto No. 2, “The Wheel,” an LA Phil commission written for soloist Karen Gomyo. Adams’ style merges his background as a jazz bassist with European modernism and acoustic-digital sound worlds. After intermission, the orchestra performs Stravinsky’s Petrushka (1947 version), whose vivid, contrasting blocks of sound and sharply profiled rhythms paint a dynamic, story-charged musical canvas.
