The Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Simply Beethoven series unites two leading Beethoven interpreters—pianist Rudolf Buchbinder and conductor Gustavo Dudamel—for a complete traversal of the composer’s piano concertos. Each concert pairs one of Beethoven’s dazzling works for piano and orchestra with one of his groundbreaking symphonies. On this program, the Third Piano Concerto reveals Beethoven on the cusp of a new, expressive musical language, followed by the “Eroica” Symphony, a revolutionary statement infused with the ideals of its era. Originally intended to honor Napoleon, Beethoven withdrew the dedication after Napoleon declared himself emperor, choosing instead the title “Eroica.” More than two centuries later, its heroic vision and emotional power continue to captivate audiences.
