This concert production features a unique interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s beloved Swan Lake. Conductor Elim Chan presents a version of the suite that she compiled herself, structuring the ballet music almost like a symphony. Critics have previously praised Chan’s ability to transform this familiar repertoire into something both new and timeless, noting that she shapes the music as if she were born to conduct ballet. Complementing the Tchaikovsky suite is Liszt’s Second Piano Concerto, a piece characterized by unapologetic Romantic indulgence, trademark showmanship, and musical fireworks. The concerto holds special significance for soloist Yefim Bronfman, who first performed it at age 15 during a career-launching audition. Bronfman brings an uncommon attunement to the piece’s technical and artistic challenges, balancing its manic, head-banging moments with profound poetry in the opening sections.
