Igor Stravinsky’s Petrushka is heard in its original 1911 guise, a score whose daring collage technique mirrors the visual experiments of the day—much like Picasso and Braque pasted newspaper clippings into their canvases. The program opens with Stravinsky’s scintillating Fireworks and centers on Witold Lutosławski’s striking Cello Concerto. Its introduction asks the soloist to sound a steady D every second, which the composer described as a moment of complete relaxation—or even distraction—from which the musical drama repeatedly breaks away and to which it returns.
