About this event

This concert centers on the world premiere of Sebastian Fagerlund’s new organ concerto, Ad Spiram, written for and performed by the Latvian organist Iveta Apkalna. The Latin title evokes movement “towards the spiral” or “towards the vortex,” while its root, spirare, also means to breathe—an idea that shaped the work’s sonic imagination, from intertwining air columns to the organ as a breathing instrument. In the second half, Jukka-Pekka Saraste conducts Bruckner’s Symphony No. 6, a score he regards as revealing the composer’s duality: outward humility and an inner, uncompromising will.
