About this event

In 2026, Jupiter Ensemble marks the 400th anniversary of the death of English composer and lutenist John Dowland. Dowland left one of the richest repertoires for the lute alongside the lyrical treasures of his Songs or Ayres. This major commemorative programme follows the ensemble’s September 2025 Warner Classics release, Songs of Passion, and sits at the crossroads of poetry, lyricism and instrumental music. Led by artistic director and lutenist Thomas Dunford—who calls Dowland “the John Lennon of the 16th century”—the concert reveals more than melancholia, embracing music that is joyful, playful, mysterious, introspective, meditative and amorous. A substantial chamber force of four vocalists and a five-part viol consort brings to life the popular and emotional breadth of this Renaissance sound world.
