Presented within Wigmore Hall’s Sol Gabetta Residency, this chamber recital explores the expressive world of German Romanticism for cello and piano. The first half centres on Felix Mendelssohn, pairing his B-flat Cello Sonata with three Songs without Words that showcase the instrument’s lyrical, vocal qualities. Robert Schumann’s Fantasiestücke Op. 73—works he explicitly sanctioned for cello as well as clarinet—close the first part before the interval. After the break, the focus turns to Johannes Brahms: two instrumental renderings of Lieder frame a reflective solo Intermezzo for piano, leading to the E minor Cello Sonata Op. 38. Throughout, Sol Gabetta’s singing tone and colouristic range meet Kristian Bezuidenhout’s refined, historically informed pianism in a programme designed for poetic dialogue and contrast.
