This concert by the Münchner Philharmoniker explores the waltz from its iconic Viennese elegance to its darker, more turbulent reflections. Anchored by Johann Strauss II’s The Blue Danube as the emblem of Austro-Hungarian myth and idealized waltz bliss, conductor Anja Bihlmaier sets this vision against the dance’s shadow side. The program then deconstructs the waltz: Shostakovich pares it to a nervous, grotesque outline; Zimmermann explodes it into a masked ball of historical quotations; and Ravel propels it into a frenzied whirl that oscillates between decorum and ecstasy. Across the evening, the waltz becomes both memory and critique, a dance form refracted through history’s light and darkness.
