There are few composers who have placed percussion as consistently at the center of contemporary music as Steve Reich. In his work, percussion is not merely a rhythmic accessory, but the carrier of form, energy, and musical thought. Using simple means—clear patterns, repetitions, and minimal shifts—he creates not only an astonishing sonic density but also a hypnotic effect. Reich became famous for so-called “phasing”: identical rhythmic figures run minimally against each other and gradually fall out of step. His music demands the highest precision while remaining immediate and surprisingly accessible.
