Radical versatility is Barbara Hannigan’s hallmark, and this program reflects her uncompromising approach that breaks down barriers and sheds new light on familiar works. The evening arcs from the free, improvisatory impulses of Iranian composer Golfam Khayam’s “I am not a tale to be told,” to Olivier Messiaen’s precisely notated avian calls in Oiseaux exotiques. Classical clarity and dramatic energy balance the center of the program with Haydn’s G minor Symphony No. 39, while Ravel’s Concerto for the Left Hand reveals how creative freedom can emerge from strict limitation. The concert closes with Schreker’s luminous Nachtstück, a suspended sound world of longing and memory.
