This concert pairs two monumental works that showcase the distinct symphonic voices of Dmitri Shostakovich and Gustav Mahler. The first half features Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1, composed under the pressures of Soviet cultural policy and closely associated with its dedicatee, David Oistrakh. Renowned violinist Janine Jansen takes on the demanding solo role. After the interval, the Munich Philharmonic and chief conductor Lahav Shani perform Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, the expansive “Titan,” which weaves together military calls, sounds of nature, cowbells, and a funeral march to reveal the breadth of Mahler’s early symphonic vision.
