Johann Sebastian Bach wrote the six cantatas that make up the Christmas Oratorio for the Christmas celebrations of 1734. It remains one of the most famous and frequently performed of Bach's sacred works, representing the quintessential sound of Christmas for many listeners. This concert presents a curated selection of the complete work, focusing on Cantatas I, II, III, and VI. Several chorales and arias originate from secular works Bach had previously written, so only part of the music was newly composed specifically for this oratorio. Despite these origins, the cantatas form a cohesive whole while each maintains its own distinct tonal character.
