The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra’s “Passion and Fate” program explores the profound emotional depths and historical connections of Russian orchestral music, framed by a contemporary American tribute. The concert opens with Michael Tilson Thomas’s Agnegram, a joyful piece honoring orchestra supporter Agnes Albert. Guest pianist Daniil Trifonov, a Grammy Award-winning artist, performs Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 1, a soulful work that marked the young composer’s bold beginnings. After intermission, the program culminates with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6, the Pathétique—widely regarded as one of the most intimate and moving orchestral statements, and the composer’s final musical farewell.
