Suddenly Last Summer is a new opera that fuses musical imagination and theatrical ingenuity to explore themes of truth, power, wealth, sexuality, and vulnerability. Adapted from Tennessee Williams's feverish Southern Gothic one-act play, the work marks the first opera by 2023 MacArthur Fellow and former Opera Philadelphia Composer in Residence Courtney Bryan. A New Orleans native, Bryan draws on the story’s beauty and terror to blur the lines between reality and fiction, sanity and insanity. The production is directed by Tony Award-winning director Daniel Fish, who co-wrote the libretto with Gideon Lester, and is revived in Philadelphia by Mikhaela Mahony. The creative team includes scenic design by Marsha Ginsberg, costume design by Terese Wadden, lighting design by Stacey Derossier, and projection design by Joshua Thorson. Presented by special arrangement with The University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee.
