This brand new production of L’equivoco stravagante returns to Wexford Festival Opera following a historic public vote in which audiences from 30 countries chose it as the festival’s “fun” opera for the 75th Anniversary. Rossini’s first large-scale opera, premiering in Bologna in 1811 when he was just 19, it disappeared from the repertoire after clashing with 19th‑century censors due to its subversive libretto. Directed by Max Hoehn and conducted by Riccardo Bisatti—both making their Wexford debuts—the staging promises a masterclass in Rossini’s signature buffo style. The creative team includes set designer Darco Petrovich (also cited as Darko Petrovic), costume designer Massimo Carlotto, and lighting designer Daniele Naldi. Wexford was among the first companies to revive this rarely performed work in modern times with its 1968 production.
