Chief conductor designate Klaus Mäkelä continues his exploration of Mahler’s repertoire with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. This production is devoted entirely to Mahler’s Symphony No. 7, a work with deep historical ties to the orchestra. Mahler himself conducted the Dutch premiere of the symphony with the Concertgebouw Orchestra in 1909, calling Amsterdam his “second musical fatherland.” The legacy of chief conductor Willem Mengelberg, who championed Mahler in the Netherlands, further cemented this bond. After Mahler’s death in 1911, Alma Mahler gifted the orchestra the monumental original score of the Seventh. This programme highlights the ensemble’s enduring relationship with Mahler’s whimsical and complex symphony, now led by Mäkelä.
