About this event

The production frames the staging through the contrast “Italian comedy meets German forest.” Although the action is set in Windsor and derives from Shakespeare, the production emphasizes the meeting of Italian comic-opera energy with the German Romantic forest world. Otto Nicolai combines Italianate melodic fluency with the more inward and sometimes darker sensibility associated with German Romanticism. The work is presented as a comic gender conflict shaped by mistaken intentions, marital jealousy, and the collision between social convention and individual desire. Andrea Schwalbach directs, with set design by Stephan von Wedel, costumes by Lukas Wassmann, choreography by Kati Farkas, and dramaturgy by Markus Hänsel. The opera is performed in German with surtitles, accompanied by the Kärntner Sinfonieorchester and the chorus and extra chorus of Stadttheater Klagenfurt.
