This concert highlights the enduring artistic relationship between the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and master pianist Emanuel Ax. At its center is the Dutch premiere of a new Piano Concerto written specifically for Ax by legendary film composer John Williams. Rather than Williams’s familiar cinematic idiom, the concerto reveals his deep affinity for jazz, cast in a strikingly modern voice. The program also marks the Concertgebouw Orchestra debut of Czech conductor Petr Popelka, currently chief conductor of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, who brings a refined flair for Central European repertoire. Together, the artists shape a program that deliberately contrasts modern, jazz-tinged writing with the grand symphonic drama of the 19th century.
