About this event

Opera Atelier presents a fully staged Canadian premiere of Marc Antoine Charpentier's miniature masterpiece, The Descent of Orpheus. The production unfolds with all the extravagant splendour and drama unique to the court of the Sun King, Louis XIV. It serves as the opening production for Opera Atelier's 2026/27 Season of Heroes, which explores powerful stories of transformation, sacrifice, and triumph. The staging features the company debut of American tenor Daniel McGrew in the title role, a part originally sung by Charpentier himself. The production brings together the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and Chamber Choir, alongside the Artists of Atelier Ballet. The creative vision is led by Co-Artistic Director Marshall Pynkoski, with choreography by Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg and staging/set design by Resident Set Designer Gerard Gauci. The production is designed to be an exciting and accessible introduction to opera and ballet.
