The Volksoper Wien presents a new staging of the iconic Broadway musical Chicago, exploring fame, ambition, and the glitter of show business. Director Lotte de Beer approaches the work through a Brechtian lens, highlighting how audiences are fascinated by evil and how media machinery turns scandal into heroism. The production foregrounds the dark entertainment value of ambition and deception, contrasting relentless media spotlight with the grim reality of murder. Developed with award-winning Cuban-born choreographer Arielle Smith, the staging keeps the electrifying dance sequences and world-famous jazz numbers at the heart of the experience.
